|Flash consumer confidence indicator for EU and euro area|
In July 2016, the DG ECFIN flash estimate of the consumer confidence indicator decreased in the EU (by a marked 1.8 points to -7.6) and the euro area (by 0.7 points to 7.9) compared to June.
|June 2016: Economic Sentiment broadly unchanged in both the euro area and the EU|
Note: All survey results reported in the June press release were collected before the announcement of the results of the UK referendum on EU membership on 24 June.
In June, after two consecutive months of improved readings, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) remained broadly unchanged in both the euro area (-0.2 points to 104.4) and the EU (+0.1 points to 105.7).
The Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) conducts regular harmonised surveys for different sectors of the economies in the European Union (EU) and in the applicant countries. They are addressed to representatives of the industry (manufacturing), the services, retail trade and construction sectors, as well as to consumers. These surveys allow comparisons among different countries' business cycles and have become an indispensable tool for monitoring the evolution of the EU and the euro area economies, as well as monitoring developments in the applicant countries.
