Alexander Italianer has been Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission since 2006.
Mr. Italianer joined the European Commission in 1985 as Administrator in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs. From 1995 to 1999 he was member of the Cabinet of President Jacques Santer. In 1999 he was appointed Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Verheugen responsible for Enlargement. After three years as Director of International Economic and Financial Affairs (2002-2004), he became Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Pavel Telička, associated to Commissioner Byrne in the Health and Consumer portfolio, and Deputy Head of Cabinet of President José Manuel Barroso.
Before joining the European Commission, Mr. Italianer was a research associate on the Economics Faculty at the Catholic University of Leuven.
Mr. Italianer holds a master's degree in econometrics and a PhD in economics (cum laude) from the University of Groningen.
