Hungary – state of play on infringement procedures

17.02.2012 - Information from the Spokeswoman of the European Commission: "The European Commission has received the replies from the Hungarian government today (Friday 17 February 2012).

"The European Commission has received the replies from the Hungarian government today (Friday 17 February 2012), which means that Hungary has respected the one-month deadline set by the Commission when launching the infringement procedures on 17 January 2012.
The Commission will treat the replies from the Hungarian government as a matter of urgency.
The Commission will carry out a full legal analysis to assess whether Hungary has taken appropriate and concrete steps to ensure the compatibility of Hungarian law with the European Treaties on the following issues:

1. The independence of the national central bank
2. The retirement age of judges and prosecutors
3. The independence of the data protection supervisory authority

The Commission has also received today the answers by the Hungarian government to the administrative letter on the independence of the judiciary sent by Vice President Reding and on the letter sent by Vice President Kroes on the media law.
On the basis of the legal analysis, the College will take appropriate decisions on whether any further steps would be necessary."
