ECOFIN adopts Council Conclusions on climate change

The Council continues its work on economic and financial issues to prepare the Copenhagen summit

Updated 10 June 2009

The ECOFIN Council yesterday adopted Conclusions on international financing for climate action on the basis of a report prepared by the Economic Policy Committee and Economic and Financial Committee. The Conclusions highlighted the need for developed countries to take the lead by setting binding and ambitious emission reduction targets but also for financial support for nationally appropriate actions to contain emissions in developing countries. The Council further stressed the importance of ensuring efficient, effective and equitable financing mechanisms for mitigation action and looked forward to further work on these issues ahead of the broader UN climate summit in Copenhagen at the end of the year.
