The European Commission has added a further €5 million in funding to help the people displaced by fighting in Pakistan, as well as €3 million to Afghanistan to support the victims of recent floods and the new refugees from the conflict in neighbouring Pakistan.

Explaining the reasons behind stepping up the EU response, Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said, "Conflict and food insecurity keep millions of people in humanitarian need in Pakistan." Highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities experienced by Afghans, she said "It is vital that we protect the most vulnerable, particularly women, children and the elderly, by providing them with the protection and assistance they so badly need".

This new support brings the Commission's humanitarian aid this year for Pakistan and Afghanistan to €45 million and €31.5 million respectively.
