I. International
Tropical Cyclone SAOLA-12 (GDACS, CMA, media)
- SAOLA-12 made landfall at around 23:00 UTC on 2 August in Qinyu Town in Fujian province; a few hours before landfall it was a tropical storm with a max. sustained wind speed of 84 km/h. After landfall it moved inland heading NW, weakening; it is forecast to become a tropical depression in the next few hours and then probably dissipate by 3 August
Tropical Cyclone DAMREY-12 in the Pacific (GDACS, CMA, media)
- DAMREY-12 made landfall at around 14:00 UTC on 2 August on the coast of Chenjiagang Town, in Jiangsu province in China; just before landfall it was a tropical storm with a max. sustained wind speed of 101 km/h. It then moved NW into Shandong province, weakening. In the next few hours it is forecast to continue moving NW, becoming a Tropical Depression and eventually dissipating over China
China – Heavy Rainfall (GDACS, CMA, media)
- Influenced by SAOLA and DAMREY, between 15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC on 2 August, the landfall areas of Jiangsu, Shandong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces were affected by moderate rainfall of 30 to 80mm. Heavy rainfall of 100 to 180mm was recorded in Pingtan of Fujian province (SAOLA landfall) and Rizhao of Shandong province (DAMREY landfall)
- Emergency transfer orders were in effect on 2 August in the landfall areas of DAMREY for around 5 million people at the Jiangsu coast and for several million others in Shandong. As of this morning, however, there were no reports of serious damage or victims caused by these Tropical Cyclones in China
Indonesia - Floods (BNPB, Media)
- Floods triggered by Saola tropical have resulted in 10 people dead and 5 severely injured, 4,609 people have been evacuated and 5,240 houses have been flooded and 119 houses heavily damaged
Uganda – Ebola outbreak (ECHO)
- 38 cases of Ebola have now been reported in Kibaale out of which 16 deaths have been registered
- So far, the outbreak seems under control with the Ugandan Authorities together with WHO and MSF reacting quickly and taking appropriate steps
Kenya – Intertribal clashes (ECHO)
- Recurrent intertribal clashes in Northern Kenya are occurring, with upcoming General Elections planned for the beginning of 2013
Ethiopia – Clan clashes (ECHO)
- On 26 July, clan clashes took place in Ethiopia’s Moyale, in the Southern border area (Ethiopia/Kenya). These clashes are believed to have been instigated over long lasting disputes over land rights
- According to different sources, the number of Ethiopian nationals who have reportedly fled to neighboring Kenya's Moyale town is between 10,000 and 20,000 and 51,000 people are estimated to be internally displaced in 9 woredas around Moyale town (Ethiopian side)
- Emergency Humanitarian assistance is on-going on the Kenya side of the border, however for security reasons humanitarian support has not started yet on the Ethiopian side. The situation is being closely monitored
Bangladesh – Refugee access crisis (ECHO)
- The Bangladeshi government has instructed ECHO's partners in Bangladesh (MSF Holland, ACF and Muslim Aid) to stop all their activities in the two Rohingya refugee makeshift camps in Southern Bangladesh
- The humanitarian consequences of this decision will be devastating as these NGOs currently provide basic health care to more than 70,000 people, water and sanitation to 20,000 and nutrition services to 4,000 severely under-nourished children. Vulnerable Bangladeshi communities from the surrounding population constitute a very significant part of the beneficiary caseload
- In view of those developments in Bangladesh, and considering also the humanitarian situation across the border in Rakhine State in Myanmar, the EU continues to engage with both governments for adequate humanitarian access to all those in need
Russia – Forest Fires (EMERCOM)
- From the 1 to the 2 August in three Federal Districts where the situation had been deteriorating, the number of fires went down
- At present the group of forces involved in fire-fighting in Far East amounts to 1,328 people and 252 units of equipment, including 11 aircraft. 1,888 people and 111 units of equipment are employed to put out forest fires in the Urals Federal District. In the Siberian Federal District the group of forces involved in fire-fighting has been reinforced with 11,576 people and 2,805 units of equipment. In all 41 aircraft are involved in fire-fighting.
- There is no threat to settlements or economic facilities
II. Europe
Italy – Forest Fires (EFFIS, Italian CP, media)
- According to EFFIS, as of 2 August 3 different fires in the region of Strongoli, Crotone, had burned a total area of ca. 620 ha. Other fires were recorded in Montalbano Jonico, Matera (347 ha), and Pomarico, Matera (258ha)
Spain – Forest Fires (EFFIS, Spanish CP)
- As of 20:00 Aug 02 (local time) the fire in Castilla la Mancha, Guadalajara was put under control, after having burned an area of around 1000ha (Spanish CP and EFFIS estimate). The fire in San Roque in Cadiz, Andalucia, was still active as of same time
France – Forest Fires (COGIC)
- A number of fires started on 2 August in the regions of Sartene, Lezignan-Corbieres and Molezon in the south of France; aerial means were deployed for these fires

- High temperatures in southern Spain, the whole of Hungary except the NE, SE Poland and the whole of Serbia – Orange Alert

- Extreme or very high forest fire risk in the southern half of Portugal, central and southern Spain, SE France and SW Corsica, coastal central Italy including western Sardinia and southern Sicily, coastal Croatia, the Aegean coasts and NE Greece, the north of Cyprus, NW and SE Turkey, SE Bulgaria, eastern Romania, the whole of Moldova and the southern half of Ukraine
