14/02/2013 - Only a few symbols qualify as "universal". One of these has been present for 150 years now on our planet and wherever humans are hit by the violence of other humans or conflict , it reminds us of this permanent movement of humanity and solidarity: the Red Cross.
February 17th 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Happy birthday to our partner! We congratulate the ICRC for their impressive operational abilities on all fronts but also, and especially, for the values it embodies: their adherence to the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence that allows them to do their job, even where no other relief agencies are allowed.
A symbol which, even if recognised by all, is often not respected anymore. "Don't shoot at the ambulance" is no longer a value shared by all. So this is probably the best wish we could formulate for this particular birthday: let your fight for the return of respect for International Humanitarian Law, the respect for the value of a human life, be successful. We share it!
"In 2012 alone, ECHO funded 22 operations implemented by ICRC in 19 countries, including in some of the most intensive crises like Syria and Mali, and long term crises like Afghanistan and Columbia, for a total amount of €71,415,269 "
In 2013, ECHO and the ICRC will jointly run the campaign "Health care in danger". Powerful images on posters in cities and towns along with TV spots will highlight the unrecognised issue of lack of safe access to health care in armed conflict and other emergencies. Keep an eye on the ICRC website to follow this campaign.
