29/08/2012 - Award-winning photographer and film-maker Sean Smith travelled to Niger for ECHO to chronicle the effects of the peak of the Lean Season in the Sahel. Smith, a veteran staff photojournalist for The Guardian newspaper, has covered conflicts and disasters for decades, reporting from Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Sean is usually in the thick of things, observing up-close in the moments of greatest danger. What intrigued him about this opportunity to travel through Niger was the different pace of the unfolding hunger crisis in the Sahel, where more than 18 million people are at risk.
