04/04/2012 - Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response meets a delegate in Nairobi, Kenya during the Joint Ministerial and High-Level Development Partners Meeting on "Resilience and growth in the Horn of Africa – enhanced partnership for change". The meeting was convened by IGAD with USAID's support.
In her speech to the delegates, the Commissioner emphasized that both development and humanitarian actors must invest more on building resilience in the Horn of Africa. "If we invest more in building resilience and ensuring that communities can cope better with droughts, we can reduce the need for humanitarian aid in the Horn of Africa over the long-term".
The EU's initiative for the Horn of Africa – "Supporting Horn of Africa Resilience (SHARE)" - aims at enhancing coordination between humanitarian and development actors in efforts to bring longer lasting solutions when droughts hit the people of the Horn of Africa.
The EU is the world's largest humanitarian donor to the Horn of Africa. In 2011 the European Commission alone spent €181 million on nutrition, water, sanitation and other humanitarian needs. This year the Commission has allocated €102 million for the region.
