In a world of seven billion people, nearly one billion people suffer from chronic hunger and malnutrition. The European Commission has joined forces with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the European Professional Football League (EPFL) in a campaign to help raise awareness of the action needed to help those most in need. The first leg of the campaign is dedicated to the looming food crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa where five countries have declared an emergency and called for international assistance.
The climax of the campaign is the 2012 Match Day Against Hunger. This third edition of the event will bring together at least 20 European Football Leagues and over 300 professional football clubs in more than 150 stadiums in at least 15 countries. The matches will take place on 31st of March and 1st of April. For full programme see www.endinghunger.org
