63,000 people came together for three days under the summer sun (Sept. 30th – Oct. 2nd) in the magnificent medieval city of Ferrara, a UNESCO world heritage site. The event was the 5th annual international festival of journalism organised by the "Internazionale" daily newspaper. Among the 169 guests were the biggest names of the international press, who chaired 74 debates on hot topics ranging from the Euro crisis to issues on climate change and energy conservation, and from social and political revolutions to questions on immigration and humanitarian crises.
The Italian Representation of the European Commission was, for a second time, the institutional partner of the festival. Working with the two information networks financed by the Commission: Presseurope and Euranet, both of whom were buzzing with news from the festival, the Commission organised a dozen debates and conferences that were well attended, as well as live radio programmes and a competition and exhibition of political cartoons about the European Union that were published in the Italian press during the year.
ECHO was also well represented at the festival both on the Commission's and the World Food Programme's information stands. ECHO also received a tribute from the Malian musicians Amadou and Mariam, former Ambassadors against hunger for the EU, during a concert they gave attended by several thousand people.
