25/06/2012 - The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection department (ECHO) has wound up activities in Burundi. ECHO opened an office in the capital Bujumbura in 1994 to help thousands of Burundians affected by ethnic fighting. In the same year Burundi received many refugees fleeing the Rwandan genocide. Civil war ended in 2005 and the Commission embarked on funding programmes under the theme of Linking Relief, Rehabilitation and Development. Now, it is time for development actors to take over.
