11/07/2012 - Central America is one of the most disaster prone regions in the world. Hurricane Mitch, Tropical Storm Agatha, Hurricane Stan, and Tropical Depression 12-E are just some of the most recent that have passed through, leaving massive destruction in their wake.
ECHO has been present in the region since its establishment in 1992. In these two decades it has provided more than €170 million in humanitarian aid to Central America. The assistance has gone to those affected by disasters or armed conflicts. ECHO's funding in Central America arrives not only after, but also before disasters. Numerous lives have been saved through risk reduction and disaster preparedness programmes.
