Tackling epidemics in Afghanistan

27/02/2013 - In a country ravaged by over three decades of conflict, the public health system’s capacity to respond to emergencies is logically weak. For the past two years, ECHO has therefore been funding the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to improve Afghans' access to health services in times of emergencies by strengthening the country’s preparedness and response capacities to epidemics, both at the national and provincial levels. The results are impressive: last year, the vaccination for measles reached close to 11 million children – one third of Afghanistan’s total population. Story credit: Pierre Prakash EU/ECHO
