Somalia is on the brink of famine. Half the population is experiencing food shortages and is in need of assistance. Malnutrition is also at emergency levels. There are 363 000 children suffering from acute malnutrition, one-fifth are in such severe state that they require immediate life-saving treatment. Support from the European Commission’s humanitarian aid department and other donors enables UNICEF to provide ready-to-use therapeutic food to the children and deliver health messages to their mothers. In 2016, the European Commission provided €2 million to UNICEF, helping them and their partners treat 96 000 children.
