2017 marked 10 years of Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, which restricts access to food, water, electricity, and other necessities. The crisis, exacerbated by the continued division between the Palestinian groups, has caused a deteriorating humanitarian situation, with communities suffering from a host of problems including crippling unemployment, damaged infrastructure, and a lack of basic healthcare and other critical services.

Around 80 percent of the population remain dependent on external assistance, including at least
40 000 people displaced by the Gaza war in 2014. In 2017, the EU allocated €13.5 million to programmes designed to address poverty and the worsening living conditions. With the assistance from the EU and its partner Première Urgence Internationale, 54-year-old Abdel has managed to secure a livelihood for himself and his family.
