Since October 2016, the European Commission has helped the Greek authorities to facilitate access to education for refugee children in Greece. The Commission has financed the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to ensure the safe transportation of children to schools and the distribution of school material to students.
Through this programme, 2500 children have been picked up every day at the accommodation centres where they temporarily live and brought by bus to the nearest Greek schools. The possibility for refugee children to go to Greek schools has enabled them to access quality education, tailored to their needs, and take the first step to integrate into the host community.
