Hardship in the Desert: Tens of Thousands Fleeing Fallujah Still Left Stranded

This week, the first Iraqi families returned to their homes after the war-ravaged city of Fallujah was recaptured by Iraqi forces earlier this summer. However, the majority of those who the fled the fighting between the Islamic State group and the Iraqi government remain displaced in Iraq’s inhospitable Anbar desert. The Norwegian Refugee Council, one of many aid organisations supported by EU Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) in Iraq, is providing tens of thousands of people with water and other services in the displacement camps near Amiriyat al-Fallujah, 50km west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
