The recent conflict in Iraq has caused over 3.2 million people to flee from their homes. For displaced children, a birth certificate means accessing basic services, like health care and education. The UN Refugee Agency and its implementing partners have provided free legal assistance to over 11 000 internally displaced people and nearly 4 600 Syrian refugees in Iraq during 2015.
Here are the stories of three families from Ba’aj, Ninewa province, who were forced to flee to Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. There, they received legal assistance thanks to generous donations from the European Commission and other donors, and were able to have their children registered.
