European Maritime Disaster project
This project was conducted by the Emergency Plans Unit of the Essex County Council in the United Kingdom (Project Manager: Ms. Rosanna Briggs, Senior Emergency Planning Officer SS). The project was followed-up by a core group including representatives from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Objectives
- To increase awareness of the need for further planning on an international scale for a Maritime Disaster;
- To have closer cooperation with Member States;
- To learn from those countries who had experience of such disasters ;
- To develop information technology systems to improve cooperation;
- To identify and develop training and exercise arrangements to be shared on an international scale;
- To produce a training video which would be suitable for all Member States;
Highlights
A pilot project was conducted in order to compile a data base on previous maritime disasters together with the organisational arrangements in place. Data were collected through a dedicated password protected internet site.
A European workshop was conducted with the participation of experts from all EU Member States.
A training video was produced aiming to provide insight into the procedures used in Member States to tackle maritime disasters.
