Chile earthquake

On 27 February, an earthquake followed by a tsunami caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure in Chile, particularly in the areas around Concepcion. At least 500 people are reported dead. Several aftershocks have shaken the country since.
Several EU member states have offered assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Austria donated generators and large tents, Sweden provided mechanical bridges and tents have also come from Slovakia.
The Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) has deployed a team to coordinate the incoming European civil protection assistance and support the Chilean authorities in assessing the needs. The team is based at Concepcion and its assessments have focused on Concepcion and surrounding areas.
During the mission, the European civil protection team has been supported by a Technical Assistance and Support Team (TAST) financed by the European Commission. The remaining team members and the TAST will return to Europe this Wednesday, 17 March.
