The newly appointed Director General of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection department, Mr Claus Sorensen, was on mission in the Horn of Africa with field visits in Somalia and South Sudan. In Somalia, Sorensen visited Mogadishu to witness the gains made so far in fighting impacts of famine and drought. The European Commission gave €77 million to the Somalia crisis in 2011. In South Sudan, Sorensen visited the unfolding refugee crisis in Upper Nile state fuelled by the borderline fighting in Blue Nile state of Sudan. Thousands of refugees are camping in the open in the Doro area near the town of Bunj with little to go by.
