In 2014, 114 eco-innovation projects have been selected for funding under the SME Instrument, a part of Horizon 2020 the EU framework programme for research and innovation dedicated to innovative small businesses.

20 projects will receive up to €2.5 m. to finance innovation activities, such as demonstration, testing, piloting, scaling up, and miniaturisation. The SMEs will also benefit from up to 12 days of business coaching and extensive support, training, mentorship and facilitating access to risk finance. These projects have been selected under Phase 2 of Horizon 2020 SME Instrument.

Another 94 projects have been selected in 2014 under Phase 1 of the programme that offers €50 000 in funding and 3 days business coaching to help SMEs to carry out a feasibility study to verify the viability of their innovation.

The call for proposals is constantly open but projects are evaluated 4 times per year. The next deadlines in 2015 are 17 June, 17 September and 25 November.

Two SME Instrument topics address eco-innovation directly:

  • Boosting the potential of small businesses for eco-innovation and a sustainable supply of raw materials and
  • Resource-efficient eco-innovative food production and processing.

This media is developed from a waste which is iron rich.
Therefore making it adsorbent, allowing it to attract phosphate from waste streams.
This could be a suitable solution for the wastewater industry.
