Commissioner Dalli visits the Zentrum für Europäischen Verbraucherschutz
09 February 2012
On 13 February Commissioner Dalli will visit the European Consumer Centres of France and Germany. Both belong to the European Consumer Centres Network (ECC-Net) and are hosted in Kehl (Germany) by the Zentrum für Europäischen Verbraucherschutz (EVZ).
The Commissioner will also meet with the Online-Schlichter, the on-line dispute resolution body. The purpose of the visit is to understand how the centres and the on-line dispute resolution work in practice, and what kind of issues they have to deal with.
The visit will be honoured by MEP Lamassoure and MEP Schwab, both involved in consumer policy and the minister for consumer protection of Baden-Württemberg, Alexander Bonde, will be present as well.
The ECC-Net is a network that comprises 29 European Consumer Centres: covering all the Member States of the European Union, Iceland and Norway. The ECC-net offers help to consumers in finding solutions to cross-border shopping problems. They provide consumers with information, advice and support on their rights when buying goods or services in another EU country, Iceland or Norway. The services provided by the European Consumer Centres are free of charge.
For more information, see: http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/ecc/index_en.htm
ECC-Net is co-financed by grants - by the EU and the participating countries. ECCs are hosted by public bodies or non-profit-making organisations which have been designated by the Member State or the competent national authority. The EAHC is organising the call for proposals, conducting the evaluations, signing and managing the ECC-net grants on annual basis.

Health economic assessment tools (HEAT) for walking and for cycling: Methodology and user guide has been published
18 January 2012
The promotion of cycling and walking as everyday physical activities not only promotes health but can also have positive effects on the environment.
This booklet summarises the tools and guidance developed to facilitate this shift: the methodology for the economic assessment of the transport infrastructure and policies in relation to the health effects of walking and cycling; systematic reviews of economic and health literature; and guidance on applying health economic assessment tools and the principles underlying it. This methodology and user guide will be of key interest to professionals at both national and local levels: transport planners, traffic engineers, and special interest groups working on transport, walking, cycling or the environment, as well as health economists, physical activity experts and health promotion experts.
The publication received co-funding from the European Union in the frame of the EU Health Programme.

Review of practices on New born Screening across the EU: final report
18 January 2012
Newborn screening (NBS) is the process of testing newborn babies to detect a pre disease abnormality or early disease where early intervention is able to improve health outcomes.
As the availability of new technologies makes it easier for more and more diseases to be screened at birth this has resulted in an important heterogeneity in Europe in this area. There is therefore a need for identifying what are the current practices in the Member States; for what reasons the diseases to be screened are selected; how the decisions to expand the list of diseases are taken; what are the technologies used; and what organisation is in place to ensure comprehensive screening of all newborns and to evaluate the performance of the programmes.
This information is now available, through the main deliverables of a tender launched by the EAHC in 2009.
Please find here the four files about these tenders:
- Executive Report to the European Commission on newborn screening in the European Union

- Newborn screening in Europe Expert Opinion document

- Report on the practices of newborn screening for rare disorders implemented in Member States of the European Union, Candidate, Potential Candidate and EFTA Countries

- Short Executive Summary of the Report on the practices of newborn screening for rare disorders implemented in Member States of the European Union, Candidate, Potential Candidate and EFTA Countries
