European Commission launches consumer information campaign in Bulgaria
21 January 2010
Initiated by the European Commissioner for Consumers Affairs Meglena Kuneva, a campaign about consumer rights was launched today in Sofia.
In her welcoming message at a press conference the deputy head of the Commissioner’s cabinet, Ms Jivka Petkova said: 'EU laws have given consumers rights, but making laws is only one step towards empowering consumers.'
'To make these rights work for us in practice, we need to know our rights, we need to assert them firmly and we need to know where to turn to for further information or advice'.
The main themes of the campaign concern consumer rights in the cases of faulty products, bank services and package holidays. Key rights in these areas will be promoted in TV, internet and print advertising.
More detailed material for consumers can be found in fact sheets covering fifteen themes, published by a Bulgarian consumer rights association "Active Consumers" and available from their offices, as well as at the European Consumer Centre – Bulgaria and on the campaign website at www.aktivnipotrebiteli.bg/kampania.
The campaign is part of the initiative of the European Union to empower Bulgarian citizens and to make consumer rights work for them in practice.
It is supported by the European Union and financed by the EU with a total amount of about 650 000 euro.
The Executive Agency for Health and Consumers manages the contracts related to this action and monitors the implementation of the campaign.
