While there has been much research on the management of medicines in out-patient sector, there is little data on how medicines are purchased and used in hospitals.

The report prepared in the framework of the project "Pharmaceutical Health Information System (PHIS)" helps to fill this gap.

The report pulls data from majority of the 27 EU Member States and gives a good picture of purchasing strategies, financing schemes and quality assurance mechanisms regarding medicines in hospitals across the EU.

The research also gives raise to series of interesting conclusions and valuable recommendations.

The PHIS project aims at increasing knowledge and exchange of information on pharmaceutical policies, in particular on pricing and reimbursement, in the EU Member States, covering both the out-patient and the in-patient sector. It is co-funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health.
