What type of conferences?

Financial contributions may be awarded by the European Union for the organisation of conferences which:

  • pursue as their primary goal one or more priorities of this annual work plan,
  • have European Union-wide dimension, i.e. engage representatives of ten or more countries participating in the EU Health Programme,
  • are organised by a public body or a non-profit-making body established in a country participating in the EU Health Programme, and which has relevant experience in cooperation at EU level.

Who can apply?

The Call is open to single organisations (not consortia) active in the field of public health and risk assessment.

Country eligibility
To receive support for organising a conference the organisation needs to be established in:

  • The European Union (any of the 27 Member States) or
  • An EFTA country party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway) or
  • Croatia

Type of organisation
Conference proposals can be submitted by a public body or a non-profit-making body established in a country participating in the EU Health Programme. In order to be eligible, the latter (including universities, higher education establishments, non-governmental organi-sations, foundations and other organisations) shall submit their statute that provides a justification for their non-profit making status.

The annual work plan foresees two categories of conference that can receive funding in the framework of the EU Health Programme (2008-13): conferences organised by the country holding the Presidency of the European Union (one for each Presidency) and other conferences.

The call for proposals for other conferences is not open to conferences organised by the Presidencies.

How much co-funding?

The selected conferences will be eligible for co-financing by the EU of up to EUR 100,000 with a maximum 50 percent of the total budget of the conference.

Please note that overheads (indirect costs) are not eligible for the applicants receiving an operating grant from the Union budget during the period in question.

General principles

The following general principles apply to funding for conferences:

  • Co-financing rule: you need to have your own financial resources or financial resources of third parties to contribute to the costs of the conference;
  • Non-profit rule: the grant may not have the purpose or effect of producing a profit for you; but conference fees are considered as income.
  • Non-retroactivity rule: you can get co-funding only  for the costs incurred after the starting date stipulated in the grant agreement;
  • Non-cumulative rule: each action may give rise to the award of only one grant to any one beneficiary (you can not get paid twice for the same cost).
