ICT 2013

Vittoria COLIZZA registered to attend the ICT 2013 Event

Vittoria Colizza completed her PhD studies in Statistical and Biological Physics at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste, Italy, where she graduated in 2004 with a thesis titled Statistical mechanics approach to complex networks: from abstract to biological networks. After holding a research position for two years at the Indiana University School of Informatics in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, she spent a year as Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University and joined the ISI Foundation (Institute for Scientific Interchange, in Turin, Italy, in 2007. In the same year Colizza was awarded a Starting Independent Career Grant in Life Sciences by the European Research Council Ideas Program (more info on the EpiFor project webpage,, establishing a computational epidemiology lab at the Institute. In January 2011 Colizza joined the U707 at Inserm, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, where she now leads the EPIcx lab (, while keeping a joint appointment at ISI Foundation. Her main research activities focus on the characterization and modeling of the spatial spread of emerging infectious diseases, by integrating methods of complex systems with statistical physics approaches, computational sciences, digital thinking, and geographic information systems. Big data and digital epidemiology are also key components of her research on participatory surveillance for influenza-like-illness in France (, node of a multi-country collaboration involving more than 30,000 European citizens ( Colizza received in 2012 the Louis-Daniel Beauperthuy prize in human biology and medical sciences by the French National Academy of Sciences and the Young Scientist Award for Socio- Econophysics 2013 for her contributions in the field of computational epidemiology. Since 2011 Colizza serves as Young Advisor of the Vice President of the European Commission Mrs Neelie Kroes for the Digital Agenda of Europe.
