Language Technologies – The cornerstone key enabling technology for the Digital Single Market

Room H1F, 07/11/2013 (18:00-18:45)

The Single Digital Market has been proposed as an accelerator to combat the crisis & create jobs. Language Technologies (intelligent content, speech & translation) are key components towards achieving these goals. They are at the heart of the Knowledge Society characterised by ubiquitous access to (multilingual) data & content for 500M+ Europeans. With a global turnover of €19B & average growth rate of 11%, LT represents an important sector & one in which Europe’s leadership in R&I calls out to be transformed into economic value. LTs are mainly developed by innovative SMEs.

Without intelligent multilingual content technologies, the European single digital market will not happen. This session will discuss innovation in language technologies, present a case study - Towards a single market in Tourism: The role of multilingual interactive digital assistants, and have a glimpse at the Lithuanian Language strategy. Among the speakers are: Marta Nagy-Rothengass, Head of Unit, EC; Jochen Hummel, Chairman, LT-Innovate; Prof. Hervé Bourlard, IDIAP. For more details, have a look at the enclosed programme.

The session is organised in the context of the LT COMPASS project.

Organised by: Margaretha MAZURA (EMF, United Kingdom)

Topic: EU Policy

Thanks to all that participated in our networking session (the room was too small to host all of you). You can find all presentations of our session at: http://bit.ly/1cbzl9R
