Standards for e-Infrastructures & Future Internet Research

T 009, 27/09/2010 (14:00-15:30)

Interactions between the future internet research and standardisation communities are important, as demonstrated by the development of grid, cloud and distributed computing infrastructure standards.

The development and adoption of grid, cloud and distributed computing infrastructure (DCI) standards have entered a critical phase in the past two years. While the grid concept has been developed essentially to support the federation of HPC resources, the cloud concept is being seen as a way to support the dynamic provisioning of computation and storage with clear, attractive business models. This networking session, co-organised by the EC-funded projects SIENA, MyFIRE and MOSQUITO, focuses on addressing the challenges facing the grid, cloud and future internet research communities by gathering stakeholders from pan-European initiatives, standard development organisations (SDOs) and policy bodies.

This networking session is an important initial step forward for the SIENA project. By working closely with standardisation and interoperability initiatives, the SIENA project is supporting standards and interoperability throughout European research infrastructures. Increasing the collaboration of FP7 and ESFRI projects with standards bodies carries those outcomes to the EGI initiative and the DCI community, a main target of support for the project. The development of the DCI roadmap through the SIENA project comes in a timely manner to support the Digital Agenda for Europe.

Application porting will strongly be affected by the availability of standards. Application developers can be reluctant to adapt their components to a specific platform if there is not a guaranteed support, at least in the medium term. By reducing the cost of migrating applications from one platform to another, this issue is reduced. From the VENUS-C user scenario activity, we want to demonstrate the suitability of commercial and public Cloud platforms for research, and therefore we share the interest in this topic.

As researcher at an HPC center and participant in DCI projects, I believe that open standards implementations are necessary for the heterogeneous integration of HPC solutions enabling interoperability and accelerating adoption.

The role of the SIENA project for the development of the DCI roadmap is of primary importance at EU level to demonstrate the adoption and evolution of interoperable e-Infrastructures through the coordination of the different DCIs players and the reinforcement of the open standards message.

this session acts as a build up on the discussions which will take place at the first sIENA roadmapping event to take place on 27th October in conjunction with OGF30.

Don't miss these two important events which will have a number of SDOs, DCI projects and experts from enterprise and eScience driving forward talks to help align the global standardization of distributed computing infrastructures and emerging cloud computing.

Definitely a very valuable session - especially with a view to the emerging paradigm of data intensive science. Without doubt, researchers heavily benefit form open cloud computing technologies and interoperability with other existing and emerging infrastructures such as Grids and the future Internet.

Moreover, this session will facilitate networking and alignment between the DCI projecs cofunded by the EC such as VENUS-C.

The FP7 SHAPE and REMICS projects have just concluded the SoaML standard for service modeling in OMG, www.omg.org, www.shape-project.eu, www.remics.eu, www.soaml.org - we are now looking into CloudML/PIM4Cloud.
