BIG DATA, LITTLE PRIVACY?: Data Mining Meets Society!

T 012, 29/09/2010 (11:00-12:30)

The opportunities and challenges surrounding big data will be analysed by stakeholders.

Big data creates big issues, one of which is privacy. But while there is concern that big data could lead to ‘Big Brother’, collected data can also be used to create economic value, establish a more transparent society and lead to more accountable government. One solution is to have proper regulation and technology to address these privacy issues; in fact, the need for new big data regulations was highlighted recently in an Economist report. This session aims to bring together all stakeholders with an interest in the opportunities and social implications surrounding big data. In addition, data collected through emerging mobile technologies will be in the spotlight.
