COMPANIONS: Affective conversational agents

This is a technology or research stand, located in Zone R6 - Content and Knowledge. Stand number: R6-19

The COMPANIONS or ‘intelligent, persistent, personalised, persistent multi-modal interfaces to the internet’ is an FP6 IST project.

This exhibit will present the results of the COMPANIONS Integrated Project by showing two prototypes of affective conversational agents or virtual ‘companions’. The first one, which ‘speaks’ English, is a virtual agent to whom the user can complain about their working day. It can recognise some 40 events of a typical office day. The companion can discuss these events and will be sympathetic, offering advice and comfort by assessing their implications. Throughout the dialogue, it evaluates the user’s emotional state by analysing both their voice and the content of the dialogue. The second one, which speaks Czech, is a multimedia installation supporting reminiscences about the user’s past, by looking at their digital photographs – this model is targeted at senior citizens.
