OCTOPUS: Novel Design Principles and Technologies for a New Generation of High Dexterity Soft-bodied Robots Inspired by the Morphology and Behaviour of the Octopus

OCTOPUS is focusing on ‘novel design principles and technologies for a new generation of high-dexterity soft-bodied robots’.

OCTUPUS is an Integrated Project (IP) on robot design inspired by the morphology and behaviour of the octopus. The project’s big challenge is to investigate and understand the principles that give rise to the octopus’ sensory-motor capabilities, incorporating them in new design approaches, and building an embodied artefact, based on the eight-arm body of an octopus. The resulting robot should have a similar performance – in water – to an octopus in terms of dexterity, speed, control and flexibility. This exhibit will present the most important results of the project so far, including biological results which will be illustrated with posters and videos. Robotics results will be presented via physical prototypes, in particular the first octopus-like arm prototype.
