This exhibit outlines the work of Photonics4Life and especially the development of the bio particle explorer for fast and reliable germ detection. In recent years, Photonics4Life researchers have worked on the basics for a rapid on-site monitor able to identify a single previously unknown bacterium. The device combines Raman spectroscopy with an image analysis technique. Each molecule scatters the incident laser light specifically leading to a "molecular fingerprint" for each microbe, which is analysed by pattern recognition. At the end of 2008, after only six years of research work by scientists from the Friedrich Schiller-University Jena and the University of Freiburg, a Berlin company, rap.ID Particle Systems GmbH, brought the monitor to market.
