Active and Healthy Ageing: an opportunity for Regions

--- Posted by Maria Iglesia Gomez, DG SANCO, Head of Unit "Innovation for Health and Consumers"and Ilias Iakovidis, DG CONNECT, Acting Head of Unit “Digital Social Platforms”

European Health and care services are mostly in the hands of regional authorities. They are decisive for the success of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA).

During the Open Days 2012 - European Week of Regions and Cities we organised a workshop to see how they can leverage structural and regional funds to make health care

LED’s safe energy

--- Posted by Berit Wessler, OSRAM AG, on behalf of the consortium of the FP7 project SSL4EU

Worldwide almost 20% of the electricity is used for lighting. That corresponds approx. to the total electricity consumption of the EU. LED light sources could theoretically save up to 50% of that electricity. And even more important: lighting offers one of the easiest ways to actually realize that energy saving potential as no huge investments are needed upfront and at the same time users are able to reduce their own energy bill.

How can we motivate people to adopt more sustainable travel behaviour?

--- Posted by Marcel Bijlsma, project coordinator FP7 project SUNSET

Traffic jams are one of my personal frustrations. And I’m not alone as 75% of all Europeans live in urban regions, where traffic jams have become a fact of life. European crisis or not. But how can we achieve good accessibility of the places where I want to go and at the same time keep our environment safe and green? Investments in infrastructure and alternative modalities are expensive, time-consuming and irreversible.

Couldn’t we think of an alternative, more flexible and cost-effective approach? I think so. Travel is in the end all about human behaviour. Couldn’t we focus on travellers instead of infrastructure and seduce

“Greening” the Cloud

--- Posted by Tony Gore, project Manager of FP7 Project EuroCloud

With the rise in mobility in computing e.g. smartphones, tablets etc, the amount of computing concentrated in remote systems such as datacentres is rapidly increasing. However, these datacentres are always on, 24/7, with standby power generators. The power consumption of these datacentres is more or less constant, whether they are working hard or idle.

In Europe, datacentre power consumption is equivalent to the entire consumption of a country the size of The Netherlands, and it has roughly doubled

Staying longer and safer at home with Kompaï, the companion robot

--- Posted by Vincent Dupourqué, project coordinator of AAL-DOMEO project

Having started developing service robots in the 80s by founding a company called ROBOSOFT, I was wondering how the robotic technologies could be used to help people, not only for military, space or industrial applications.

The AAL programme gave me the opportunity to develop this idea by funding a project called DOMEO, whose goal is to develop a robotic platform for personalized homecare services, as well as cognitive and physical assistance.

This project initiated the development of the Kompaï
