The action aims at reversing and improving the current lack of female workforce in the ICT sector. Girls choosing ICT careers are decreasing, and the opportunities offered by new technologies require proper attention to reverse the trend. The Commission, following a detailed study, put in place several activities and events to fight the trend.

A study on "Women active in the ICT sector" was published in 2013, including results dissemination. A "Girls in ICT Day 2013" was held in April 2013 to impulse a policy impetus to advance women & ICT agenda. The Commission has also supported the Digital Girl/Woman/Organisation with Digital Impact competition for Europe's outstanding women in the digital sector.

What is the problem ? Women are under-represented in the ICT sector at all levels

The number of young people, in particular girls and women, studying and choosing careers in ICT is decreasing and not keeping up with growing demand for highly skilled ICT professionals.

Why is EU Action required ? We need to attract more women into ICT jobs

In order to enhance Europe's competitiveness and put it back on the path of growth as well as empower all European citizens to make the most of the opportunities offered by new digital technologies and impulse innovation in Europe
