The European Commission is committing €90 million to Open and Disruptive Innovation over the next 12 months. A new tool to help doctors communicate with non-responsive patients; a cloud-based irrigation controller to improve water efficiency on farms by up to 30%; an "electronic nose" to better determine how fresh your food is - these are a few of the 30 tech SMEs and start-ups to receive EU funding. Trying to squeeze into tight spaces, carrying out highly repetitive tasks and living with back injuries: these everyday realities of working in aviation construction will soon be over. By bringing robots onto the factory floor to carry out the uncomfortable and tedious tasks, the EU-funded project VALERI hopes to place a higher value on human know-how. Seven partners, including Airbus, from Spain, Germany and Austria are building a working laboratory prototype and will test it in a factory setting by 2015. Read more

The European Commission has awarded prizes to the winners of the eInclusion awards at the Digital Agenda Assembly held in Brussels on 21st and 22nd June 2012. People from all walks of life participated in two categories of a competition: “I am Part of IT” designed for individuals and organisations whose use of IT helped overcome exclusion or brought new skills; and “Be Part of IT” designed for organisations or individuals who champion e-Inclusion by undertaking and supporting relevant initiatives.
