The European Parliament and the Council recently adopted a Directive on measures to reduce the cost of deploying high speed electronic communications networks. Among others, this Directive aims at enhancing the cooperation between telecommunications and utility providers in the deployment of high speed networks.
In view of this, the Commission has organised a workshop in Brussels on 26 June 2014, for policy-makers and industry. The workshop provided information on the measures introduced by the Directive and raised awareness about the mutual benefits of cross-sector cooperation between energy utilities and electronic communications providers.
The aim was to present successful cooperation projects, to illustrate good practices on commercial arrangements and contractual solutions (e.g. cost-sharing agreements), and discuss possible synergies with smart grid deployment, as well as possible incentives for utilities.
