SAFROS - Patient Safety in Robotics Surgery

Article
The main goal of the SAFROS Project is to explore whether robotic surgery carried out in accordance with safety criteria can improve the level of patient safety currently achievable by traditional surgery.

Safety by itself is an "umbrella" term that, especially in surgery, covers several aspects of a very complex scenario involving many variables and conditions.

The first achievement of the project is, in fact, a methodology to analyse a surgical scenario in its entirety and to understand where safety can be improved upon. This has been achieved thanks to close interactions with surgeons and medical personnel in order to formalise safety requirements, to establish safety procedures and verification protocols, and to develop tools, materials, computer algorithms, and methodologies addressing specific safety requirements.
