Editorial - 2nd Newsletter Net-it-Be

News: 14/05/2013 - 02:00
The forecast for the Future Internet looks bright and sunny thanks to good news and progress in the first half of the year. Europe can expect even bigger things around the Horizon 2020 launch …

Since our last net-it-be Net Futures newsletter in January, our focus on cooperation with international partners has borne fruit, resulting in a second coordinated call with Brazil – following a successful call evaluation taking place outside Europe, a first for the FP7 ICT programme. The cooperation with Japan has turned into a coordinated call as well, followed by an important EU-Japan Consultation workshop on networked technologies and systems that took place in April 2013.

We are also glad to announce the latest ‘R&D investment’ news with a fresh wave of recently launched projects culminating in a €50-million boost to develop 5G technologies and ultimately make the ultra-high-speed mobile broadband technology – so crucial in the digital era – a reality for Europeans. As our Commissioner Neelie Kroes said, "I want 5G to be pioneered by European industry, based on European research and creating jobs in Europe – and we will put our money where our mouth is."

The Future Internet Assembly celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Together with the Irish Presidency of the EU, we decided to organise the event around a single but powerful theme: the Future Internet’s role in accelerating innovation, supporting EU competitiveness and, ultimately, enabling a new wave of technologies against the backdrop of Horizon 2020.

These and more thought-provoking stories are to be found in issue 2 of net-it-be. We hope you find them informative, helpful and a source of inspiration. As always, your feedback and opinions are important to us and we look forward to receiving your comments via Twitter or e-mail.
