Digital Champions: Cyprus needs increased internet penetration

Cypriot authorities appointed Dr. Stelios Himonas as Digital Champion. Cyprus is the 19th EU country to appoint its representative in the Digital Champions network.
40% of Cyprus' population has never used the internet and the main reason is that they think they don't need it

Dr. Himonas' main objective will be to increase the internet penetration in the country. "To achieve this, we need to make the people understand the benefits of the internet and to give them the opportunity to acquire the e-skills.  Another important step is to give internet access to everybody", said Mr Himonas.

"40% of Cyprus' population has never used the internet and the main reason is that they think they don't need it", he added. In his activity as Digital Champion, Dr. Himonas will target all groups of population, but will give special attention to the elderly and the disadvantaged.

Stelios Himonas is working as  Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Public Order in Cyprus. During 2000 and 2012 he was the Director of the Telecommunication Department and of the Department of Electronic Communications, in the Ministry of Communications and Works in Cyprus.
