Edmond Grace is a Jesuit priest. He has a law degree from Trinity College Dublin and post-graduate studies at the Columbia Law School. After lecturing for some years at the National College of Ireland, he started working in an inner city parish overrun by drug dealing.
As a community spokesperson, he had dealings with elected politicians and public officials. This experience began a process of reflection and conversation with elected politicians, prominent public servants and leaders in the community and voluntary sector on the subject of democracy. This lead to the publication of ‘Democracy and Public Happiness’ (IPA, 2007). PeopleTalk – Citizen Juries Shaping Government – is a further development of these conversations in different parts of the country. A pilot project in Galway County, will be launched next month. The aim will be to get a citizens’ view on how government organises itself in serving the citizen.
