Going Local | Cyprus

Going Local Cyprus brings the European Commission's representatives to Cyrpus to communicate on the Digital Single Market Strategy in the local context. Information on events, local representation teams, reports on progress, challenges and debates in Cyprus on priority issues in this area will be updated here.

A delegation from the Commission will take part in a Digital Single Market (DSM) Going Local event that will be organised on 2 October 2015 in Nicosia.

The event will be officially opened by H.E. Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Republic of Cyprus followed by a welcome message by H.E. Mr. Marios Demetriades, Minister of Transport, Communications & Works.

The debate will kick off with two keynote speakers: H.E. Mr. Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of International Telecommunications Union (ITU) talking on ITU 150 years – one world and Mrs. Megan Richards, Principal Adviser of DG Connect presenting on a Digital Single Market for Europe.

The event will be comprised of two sessions:

  • The first session will be presided by Mr. George Komodromos, Director of Department of Electronic Communications, who will talk about Cyprus as a regional hub in the field of communications and Mr. Michalis E. Achilleos , Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Cyta, who will present ICT Innovation – the Cyta case.
  • During the second session of the event, there will be a series of presentations related to DSM. In specific, Mr. Ioannis Malekos, Head of Unit in DG CONNECT, will talk about e-commerce in the Digital Single Market followed by Mr. Therapon Therapontos, Managing Director of Logicom Solutions, representing the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who will touch upon the Digital Single Market: From Strategy to Practice.

Ms. Fryni Michael, President of Cyprus Consumer Association, will talk about the Digital Agenda- a new opportunity for Consumers and Dr. Loucas Aristodemou, President of Cyprus Consumers Union and Quality of Life will present the Digital Single Market from a consumers' perspective.

A panel discussion will follow among the aforementioned speakers moderated by Dr. Konstantinos Katzis, who will then draw closing remarks.

Going Local gives participants the opportunity to have a say on the implementation of the European Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy and for the European Commission to get a better understanding of national and local digital realities and priorities.
