Download data

This page will progressively publish relevant data sets and indicators used or produced by DG CONNECT.

The publication will be realized using different formats, corresponding to different users' needs and to different degrees of openness and interlinks. For some specific datasets, for example data coming from an ad-hoc survey, a simple download function of the raw table is activated. Some selected key indicators could be consulted through interactive charts. Other data and indicators will be available in a structured database for extraction through queries formulated according various languages.

Progressively the complete database will be provided as a graph in RDF for download. Furthermore a Linked Data / SPARQL endpoint to explore the data directly will be created.

Available open data sets

1. Selected indicators for the Digital Agenda Scoreboard

European Commission services selected about a hundred indicators, divided into thematic groups, which illustrate some key dimensions of the European information society. These indicators allow a comparison of progress across countries as well as over time. You can browse the data with the help of the visualisation tools (where you are also able to download selected information in CSV and RDF), or you can download the whole database in XLS, CSV, SQL and RDF.

 

2. Eurostat ICT community surveys

Eurostat organizes two annual community surveys for the collection of data on the information society. Framework Regulation (EC) no. 808/2004 ensures that the data are harmonised. The regulation contains two modules, covering:

  • Use of ICT and eCommerce by Enterprises
  • Use of ICT by Households and individuals

The complete Eurostat databases with the results from the surveys on the usage of information and communication technologies in enterprises and households/by individuals are available in MS-Access and EXCEL format, with the description of how to use them, including the questionnaires used since 2002.

 

3. Indicators on the electronic communications market

European Commission services collect various indicators to monitor market developments in the electronic communication sector. The main sources for the data presented in this database are National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs). The following link allows consulting three excel files presenting the data and charts for all indicators in the 27 EU countries, since 2004.

 

4. ICT research projects under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

This dataset cover all ICT research projects having received grants under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) - Cooperation program, since 2007. Projects under the Capacities program or the CIP ICT PSP are not included. A row/record is generated for each organization participating in a project. Projects have multiple partners and an organization can be the partner of multiple projects. Until 31 December 2011, around 15.000 participations have been registered. The dataset provide details about the thematic area of each project, the legal nature of the partners, their geographical location and the amount of EC grants. An annual report analyses the dataset with the purpose of providing a statistical base for the monitoring of the programme.

 

5. ESSIE SURVEY about ICT in Education - SMART 2010/0039

This study is based on over 190,000 filled questionnaires from students, teachers and head teachers in 27 countries, collected between September and December 2011. The micro-data from the three questionnaires cover four samples: ISCED level 1 (primary level of education), ISCED level 2 (lower secondary level of education) and ISCED level 3 (upper secondary level of education), distinguishing level 3A academic and 3B vocational. Due to financial, technical and time constraints, no student questionnaire has been administered in primary schools (ISCED1).

Studies and methodological papers

1. Feasibility Study on Statistical Methods on Internet as a Source of Data Gathering (SMART 2010/030)

Citizens and enterprises increasingly leave behind ‘digital footprints’. By ‘mining’ these footprints it is possible to describe a wide range of socio-economic phenomena in near real-time. This research project proposes how to use the Internet As a Data source (IaD) to complement or substitute traditional statistical sources. The pros and cons of nine different IaD-methods are discussed, on the base of a desk review of existing practices and of three field pilot experiments. They cover all three basic types of methods:

  • User centric measurements that capture changes in behaviour at the client (PC, smartphone) of an individual user;
  • Network-centric measurements that focus on measuring properties of the underlying network;
  • Site-centric measurements that obtain data from webservers (robots).

National Official Statistical Institute and the Commission services are invited to continue exploring the opportunities offered by those methods.
