EMT network

The EMT network is the forum where EMT member universities meet, exchange good practices in translation teaching and discuss future developments.

Latest additions

20 programmes have been added to the EMT network — for a period of four years — following our second call to join the network (which closed on 10 December 2010). See the full list of universities and programmes.

64 higher education institutions applied, from 20 EU and 2 non-EU countries. For the first time, one non-EU programme has been selected with observer status.

Via our EMT wiki, network members and applicants can follow developments in the network and share ideas (contact us for access). There are also regular network meetings.

Membership criteria

For admission, universities have to prove that their translator training course complies with a minimum set of quality criteria, i.e. the course should cover a broad range of competences and be tailored to suit market demands. Members of the network are awarded the EMT quality label and, in return, they are expected to promote the ethos of EMT excellence.

Selection

The next call to join the EMT network is planned for 2014; further selections will most likely be organised every four years.

Eligibility

You can apply if your programme:

  • is already in place in (and authorised by) an EU country
  • is an authorised programme run by a university in certain non-EU countries (prospective new member countries, countries taking part in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) or the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Russia). Programmes from these countries will be granted observer status.

Selection criteria

We also assess your programme against a number of other criteria – relevant to EMT standardspdf(45 Kb) Choose translations of the previous link  and the EMT strategypdf(36 Kb) Choose translations of the previous link :

  • structure of the programme — objectives, credits and expected learning outcomes of the courses given
  • coverage of EMT competences

EMT competences

  • human resources — number of teaching staff and their qualifications
  • infrastructure assigned to the programme, e.g. premises, IT equipment, CAT-tools
  • career support & monitoring — including career guidance for students, internships, tracking of  careers after graduation and employment statistics

Additional assets

We particularly welcome applications from programmes that demonstrate the following attributes — though these are not taken into account in the selection decision:

  • cooperation with higher education institutions at an international level or participation in national networks
  • effective quality assurance system
  • active in research
