Coastal development and sustainable maritime tourism were the focus themes of this year's edition of European Maritime Day. For two days in Valletta, Malta, experts from all maritime sectors and from all over Europe discussed how to drive the tourism industry forward and maintain its position not only as a sector for sustainable growth, but also as a crucial driver for the wider economy and a key contributor to the EU's Blue Growth agenda.

Challenges and opportunities for maritime and coastal tourism in Europe

Public consultation

In May 2012 the European Commission launched a public consultation on the challenges and opportunities for maritime and coastal tourism in Europe.

Acknowledging the economic potential of sustainable coastal and maritime tourism in the EU as well as the multiple challenges ahead for this sector, the European Commission will present a communication on the "Challenges and Opportunities for Maritime and Coastal Tourism in the EU". In view of the preparation of this communication, the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry launched a public consultation. 

In order to provide a more comprehensive background to the initiative,  the European Commission published a Discussion Document pdf - 100 KB [100 KB] .

Contributions were submitted by using an online questionnaire.

The consultation was closed on 6 August 2012.

A total number of 192 responses were received.
