As the Commission's in-house science service, the mission of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle. Being a Directorate-General of the European Commission, the JRC functions both as the in-house science service of the Commission and as a reference centre for science and technology for the Union. The vacancy is within Unit JRC.A.2, Scientific support to Innovation Union, Foresight and International relations, which is based in Brussels and has the mission to provide scientific support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of the Innovation Union flagship initiative and to coordinate and support the JRC’s international relations strategy. The unit is part of the Directorate for Scientific Policy and Stakeholder Relations.
We propose
An interesting and challenging position for a Policy Officer – Scientific Project Officer in the field of Bioeconomy.
This is a core project of the JRC which goal is to to set-up the Bioeconomy Observatory foreseen in the EU Commission Strategy "Innovating for Sustainable Growth: A Bioeconomy for Europe" COM(2012)60.
The mission of the Bioeconomy Observatory will be to allow the Commission to regularly assess the progress and impact of the bioeconomy.
The impact expected from the Bioeconomy Observatory will be to provide regular data and analysis for policy makers and stakeholders to monitor the development of the bioeconomy in order to support the implementation of the bioeconomy Strategy.
You will join a multidisciplinary project management team coordinated by the JRC headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) and including scientists from the JRC Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC) in Sevilla (Spain) and the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) in Ispra (Italy).
You will support the project primary coordinator, also based in the JRC headquarters, in the management of the whole project.
You will also contribute to the data collection and data analysis to be carried out by the Bioeconomy Observatory.
We look for
The candidate must be on a valid EPSO reserve list for Function Group IV auxiliary contract staff. Candidates who have already worked within the Commission for three years as auxiliary contract staff members are NOT eligible.
We are looking for a motivated colleague with a passion for innovation and scientific developments.
An ideal candidate is a bright and talented person with:
- A scientific background in sciences related to the bioeconomy (life sciences, agronomy, ecology, food science, biotechnology, chemistry)
- Experience in project management, ideally in management of scientific projects funded by the European research Framework Programme.
- Additional experience in economic analysis and/or intelligence work, preferably in relation with science and technology would be an advantage.
- Additional experience in industries related to the bioeconomy (food or feed industry, chemical industry, energy industry) would be an advantage.
- Outstanding analytical and drafting skills, or proficiency with data tools, or both.
- Very good knowledge of English and good knowledge of French
