10th International Workshop On Subsecond Thermophysics
Karlsruhe, Germany, June 26 - 28, 2013
This will be the tenth of a series of well-established workshops on experimental, theoretical, simulation, and applied aspects of the thermophysical behaviour of matter in the millisecond to picosecond time regimes. It will include, among others, rapid resistive or inductive heating (volume), pulsed laser heating (surface), and levitation techniques. Presentations regarding new experimental techniques in the area of subsecond thermophysics are always welcome. The emphasis will be on measurements of thermophysical properties at high temperatures. In this regime pulse-heating techniques are a unique approach to study the behaviour of matter under conditions near and far from thermodynamic equilibrium.
An informal workshop atmosphere has been chosen to promote exchange and cooperation among scientists and researchers from academia, research institutions, and industry, with common scientific and technical interests.
For abstracts, papers, and oral presentations, the language to be used is English. No simultaneous translations will be provided.
The workshop will consist of invited and contributed papers. Abstracts (200-300 words) are to be submitted by October 31, 2012. The content of the abstract will be the basis of acceptance for presentation at the workshop.
The deadline for the submission of abstracts has expired!
Papers presented at the workshop will be reviewed and those accepted will appear in a special issue of the journal High Temperatures-High Pressures published by Old City Publishing, Inc. The workshop registration fee includes one journal issue of conference proceedings
Full-length manuscripts not exceeding 8 pages will have to be submitted electronically by June 28, 2013. Detailed instructions for contributors may be downloaded here.
Those interested in the workshop should email their interest to K. Boboridis.
Our mailing list may not be up-to-date. Please inform colleagues who might be interested in attending the workshop.
The workshop is being organized by the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU), one of the seven institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre located in the outskirts of the city of Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is easily accessible by train. The closest airports are those of Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (45 km by taxi), Frankfurt (about one hour by train), and Stuttgart (about one hour and a half by train).
The workshop will take place in the Concert House (“Konzerthaus”) of the Karlsruhe Convention Center (“Kongresszentrum Karlsruhe”). The convention center is conveniently located in Karlsruhe’s downtown, in walking distance from the train station (1.3 km) and easily accessible by tram (www.kvv-efa.de):

Social program (for accompanying persons check here)
On Tuesday, June 25, there will be a reception at the "Hotel ibis Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof" (Poststrasse 1, 76137 Karlsruhe) starting at 18:00. Buffet dinner will follow at 19. The Workshop materials will also be handed out there.
On Thursday, June 27, at 7 pm the Workshop dinner will take place at the "Restaurant Kaiserhof" (Hebelstrasse 9 - directly at the "Marktplatz" square), a short walk from the Workshop venue .
During the whole week of the Workshop, there will be a science festival organized by the city of Karlsruhe with hundreds of events and activities at various locations throughout the city (http://www.effekte-karlsruhe.de - unfortunately only in German). The Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) is sponsoring this event and is involved with several activities. On Thursday, June 27, following the afternoon sessions, everyone is welcome to join us for a 20-minute walk from the Workshop venue to the ITU exhibit. Visitors will get a chance to experience the special challenges of our daily work in an interactive hands-on program. There will be a glove box to try simple operations (pipetting, etc). There will be a demo tele-manipulator where visitors can practice their skills. We will have a scanning electron microscope with live demonstrations. The famous Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart will also be exhibited. The ITU exhibition will share the location with the KIT and FTU Joint event "Radiation Protection - Measurement of radioactivity". We will then walk back to "Marktplatz" in time for the Workshop dinner.
All important locations are indicated on these maps .
Please download the book of abstracts.
A block of rooms has been reserved at the following hotel for the duration of the workshop (June 25-29, 2013). Please mention "Thermophysics" when making your reservation.
