Europe & Metrology in Turkey (EMIT): Lectures on "Use of reference materials"
Reference materials are key tools for achieving traceability of measurements, proving accuracy of methods and demonstrating proficiency of laboratories. Millions of measurements are performed in Europe each year. The results of these measurements form the basis of decisions important for the economy and the quality of life. For instance, the acceptance of a batch of steel, control of pollution of the environment, control of presence of pesticides in food, or early warning for heart attacks are all based on measurement results.
The use of certified reference materials ensures that analytical results are reliable, accurate and comparable between laboratories all over the world. For more than three decades, JRC-IRMM has been active in the development and production of certified reference materials and continues to supply the analytical community with this indispensable tool for quality assurance.
This lecture provides the audience with general knowledge on the proper selection and use of reference materials.
