Latest edition: March/April 2013
Topics:
In this issue: Editorial by Amalia Sartori, Member of the European Parliament and chairwoman of its Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee. Cover story: Measuring global pollution and resource use footprint.
The cover story provides new JRC data on how globalisation affects resource use and pollution worldwide. Both variables clearly show a steadily increasing trend. However, while industrialised countries have managed to stabilise and/or reduce their impact within their boundaries, emerging economies are increasing their domestic environmental impact.
Among the news items there are stories about the JRC's coordinated bioeconomy observatory to map progress towards a post-petroleum society, a new test procedure to measure car emissions, a measurement campaign to check the efficiency of pedestrian dummies to test new emergency breaks systems or the new pollution prevention and control requirements for tanneries.
Further reading provides details on EU forests carbon stock, a review of oil and gas offshore accidents, JRC research on chemicals for health protection and a new in-house method for measuring the full isotopic composition of uranium samples.
